Geography

During Key Stage 1 pupils learn to name the continents and oceans of the world as well as the countries and major capital cities that make up the United Kingdom. They investigate the similarities and differences between a small area of the UK and a contrasting non-European country. Pupils will learn to identify seasonal and daily weather patterns in the UK and the location of hot and cold area of the world. They will experience using world maps, atlases and globes and begin to simple compass directions to describe the location of features and routes on a map.

In Key Stage 2 pupils will learn to locate the world's countries, using maps to focus on Europe and North and South America. They will learn how to name and locate countries and cities of the UK and identify their human and physical characteristics. They will also identify the position and significance of latitude and longitude. Pupils will understand similarities and differences between a region of the UK and other regions around the world. They will learn how to describe, understand and investigate key aspects of physical and human geography, using the appropriate vocabulary.

History

During Key Stage 1 pupils develop an awareness of the past, using common words and phrases relating to the passing of time. They will begin to understand the chronology of recent events. They will learn about changes within living memory, events beyone living memory such as the Great Fire of London and the lives of significant individuals in the past.

In Key Stage 2 pupils continue to develop their understanding of chronology, as well as learning about changes in Britain from the Stone Age to the Iron Age, the Roman Empire, Anglo-Saxons, Vikings, a study of local history, history beyond 1066, early civilisations and Ancient Greece.
