On Wednesday 23rd April the children went on a local History walk for our Topic 'Victorians'. Did you know that North Manchester General Hospital used to be home to a large workhouse which housed 1,600 poor people. We walked down to the hospital and had a look at the different buildings. We had to guess which we thought were the modern buildings and the Victorian buildings. As a class we had a discussion and had to support our ideas with evidence such as old brick work, different style windows and the different roof types. One of the buildings had a script wrote at the top which said ‘Poor and needy the lord careth for me’. It was very interesting to see the differences between the two buildings and find out that an old Victorian workhouse use to be down the road from our school!
Today, children in 4L experienced what it was like to be a Victorian School child. The teachers and teaching assistants in Year 4 dressed up in Victorian clothes and acted very strict as actual Victorian teachers would do. The children learnt about:
Mr Tait Today, children in 4L carried out a few practical investigations to work out what factors affect volume. After the investigations, children watched a video from 'Explorify' and we had a discussion about why some birds make noise when they fly and why others make very little noise. I have attached some photos from the investigations.
Hello everyone,
On Monday 11th February, we had a visit from Dave who works at United Utilities. He came to visit us as we are currently learning about water for our Geography topic 'On Tap'. We looked at the Water Cycle and its different stages, we learnt about how water is treated to make sure it is clean and safe for us to drink. Dave told us the process that water goes through to get rid of all the dirt and harmful chemicals and how it is then piped to our schools and home for us to use. We also learnt lots of amazing facts! Did you know that leaving the tap on whilst you brush your teeth can waste up to 6 liters of water per minute? We also learnt about how we can save water such as having a shower instead of a bath and using water butts to collect rain water to water our plants. We even got some freebies such as an egg timer so we can time ourselves brushing our teeth and remind us to turn the tap off when brushing our teeth to help save water! Have a look at our pictures below to see the fun activities we got up to. Miss Bell. Hello everyone,
In the first week of term, class 4L children completed their 'Entry Point' lesson for their new topic which focuses on water. In the lesson, the children were challenged to transfer water from one area to another using a variety of equipment. All groups demonstrated excellent teamwork and managed to transport all the water from a bucket to a couple of trays. Check out our fantastic photos of the 'Wacky waterworks' challenge! Mr Tait Hello everyone,
Towards the end of the second Autumn half term, Year 4 celebrated the end of their Anglo-Saxon topic by recreating a feast. People who attended the feast included a thane (leader of the village), warriors, a minstrel, various villagers (blacksmith, carpenter, weaver and bone worker) and a couple of slaves. We had a great feast but the slaves weren't treated very well. The minstrel entertained the guests by his brilliant harp playing at the end of the feast. Check out our fantastic photos of the delicious feast! |
